I am currently trying to set up my dektop computer to use the internet. I am using my laptop to answer, using the same wireless card that won't work on my desktop.

I am using a D-link usb wireless card DWA 110 and it works fine on my laptop, but when i try it on my desktop I can't open any webpages or use any internet services. I have tried pinging (www.google.com) to no avail. I have to return the laptop soon and I really need the internet (I'm a Uni student).

Kind Regards. Aaron .

  2. You didn't mention what operating system both machines are using, nor the browsers.  Knowing this would help us give you better answers.

First, call your ISP to help walk you through your settings.  They have the expertise to do this, since they do this daily as part of the service you already pay for.

Second, if you are unable to connect after talking with your ISP, call the manufacturer of your Modem/Router.  Their toll-free number is in the booklet that comes with the router.

  3. first of all, the drivers for the usb card need to be installed on your desktop pc and card needs to show up, then, you need to see if the card's own soft sets up a connection manager or not.

Now, if all that is ok, first you do is to see if the service to run the wifi connections is started. For that, right-click My Computer and select "manage".

In the managing console open Services and Applications and then click services. In the right pane, go down the list to the Wireless Zero Configuration  service. Look if it shows "started". If not, double-click the service and start it .

If this service is not started, windows wireless configurator cannot connect and, strange thing, wireless access point manufacturers install a own factory connection manger that never works and that stops or disables this service needed to run wirless on windows.

Windows wireless network seek and connect tool is so perfect, just ask myself why card manufacturers try another way that won't work.

  5. im thinking when u switched the card to the other computer the router didn't assigne a different IP address to that computer, just hook up the card to the computer u want and unplug your modem first and it reboot, then the router and let it reboot, then restart your computer...u should be fine, if not and it is a usb card, u need a driver for those so try installing the driver and go to your system in the controll panel to see if it recognizes it...if not i have had trouble with usb connections on desk tops before try another usb port on the PC
