  1. Pearl Girl, in order for your desktop to receive a wireless signal, your laptop requires either a built-in wireless card or you will need to get a wireless card or one of those wireless gizmos that attaches to your laptops' USB port.  I would recommend an "Pre-N" speed as it will have a broader range and faster speed. In order to go wireless, you need additional hardware.

The only other way is to hard wire it to your modem or router.

In order to receive signals for your desktop, a wireless signal needs to be sent.  The only device that does this is a "Router." You need to also have a router connected to your modem by an ethernet cable.  If you don't have one, it will cost $60-$90 new. If you don't have a router, I recommend the D-Link DIR-655

My guess is you have a wireless card built into your new

Congratulations on your new computer.  Once you get the router & Card, all you have to do is go to the control panel in XP and go into network and internet connections, then set up or change internet connections after you set up your router and security settings.
