Question:

Wireless internet: disconnects while on wireless phone?

I have two desktops in my house. One is hooked up to the AT&T wireless router in the main bedroom while the other one is hooked up to a wireless USB router made by Linksys in another room.

The internet works perfect until someone picks up the wireless phone. Then the computer hooked up with the wireless internet is disconnected temporarily until the phone call is finished. Why is that?

I don't know if it's because I have the wireless phone right next to the router or if it is because the signals get mixed in the house?

What can I do to prevent this from happening? It's getting very frustrating.

  1. The wireless phone and the router are operating on the same channel.  Check the documentation for the wireless phone. There is usually a way to change the channel that the phone uses.  You can also go into the set up of your router and change the channel that the router uses.  (6 or 11 are the best channels to use for the router.)

  2. Most wireless routers work on the 2.4 Ghz band.  Guess what band most modern cordless phones work on... yup, 2.4 Ghz.

Obviously your cordless phone is interfering with your wirless signal.  It happens with microwave ovens sometimes also. Some cordless phones allow you to manually switch the frequncy being used.  If yours allows this it would keep you from having to buy a new phone or router!

Another solution would be to place the router BETWEEN the computer accessing the router wirelessly and the phone. This is difficult in homes sometimes though.
