Wireless internet problems.?

I am going to FSU next year, and they dont have wireless internet in the dorms. I have an extra wireless router and was hoping to set it up to my wired internet port in my room. The problem is that the wired internet has already been routed once, and so I am not sure if I can rerout it again wirelessly. This is confusing so could anyone help me please.

  1. yes you can reroute from the other router.  It wont cause any problems most of the time.  Just run an ethernet from one of the ports to the internet port on your wireless router.  Sometimes routers will be incompatible but for the most part your in the green.  Good luck.

edit: disable DHCP on your router if it doesn't work, although a switch or hub would be a better idea.

  2. Most routers can be 'programmed' to act as a 'dumb' Access Point -- getting around the problem you already know will happen, commonly referred to as double-NATing (routing one IP to many IPs twice).  This wouldn't cause trouble with normal web browsing but will cause some email to have problems and most games won't work.

When you get to that point call the company who made your 'extra' router and ask them if you can use that router as an access point.  They can help you set it up right.

I know on my Belkin I just log onto it's web-admin, click "use as access point" and "enable"...different brands have different ways though.

If you're curious, using a router as an access-point involves the following (sometimes done automatically when you enable AP mode):

-disable DHCP assignment (makes it act like a hub or switch)

    -disable NAT (network address translation)

-disable any router firewalls (if it has them)

-plug into LAN port instead of WAN port (may require crossover cable on older equipment)

Or you could buy a Access Point but since you have a router I'd try to use that somehow.

  3. you might want to double check on this but im pretty sure you need a switchand not a router. im almost possative you cant rout 2 times so if you use a switch it allowes the connection to still work.there are wired and wireless switches, you would need a wireless switch.
