im moving to a new house on Friday and getting cable broadband installed with, im also getting a wireless router, the room that the modem is going to be installed in is a large room with wooden flooring, just wondering if i could plug the wireless router in to the modem, then buy a wireless card for my desktop, that way no wires will need to trail around the room on the wooden flooring!

also would i get as good of a connection with wireless as i would with wired?

  1. Yes, your wireless router will work anywhere within the house (or even outside the house with close proximity).

If you are comparing between a wireless and a wire of course the speed a wire can give you is better compared to wireless because there is no interference. With all said, the speed will still be sufficient for surfing and light downloads (because I have recently "downgraded" from a wired to wireless connection)

  2. Have you considered putting wiring behind the beading of your floor?

That way you can have the better performance of hard wire easily to hand, yet have the wireless to fall back on when you don't need the performance boost and just want to have your laptop [assuming you might have one too] on your lap.

Test some TV streaming when you get the wireless, see if there is any need.

  3. In most cases, the wireless will be a worse connection than wired, but normally it is un-noticable.

If it is at the other side of a large room, then it should be fine. You should still get super-fast internet.

  4. The short answer to your question is yes. I have a wireless network set up in my house which includes two desktop Macs, a Windows laptop, a printer and a device which allow me to stream music to my hi-fi.

Incidentally I hide the modem and wireless router under my wooden floorboards. Not only does it reduce clutter but gives me a better signal downstairs.

The connection between modem and PC won't be quite as good as with a direct ethernet connection but this is irrelevant as it is still way faster than the fastest internet connection you can get. It only starts to become a problem if you say wanted to stream full screen, hi definition video from one room to another. Even then the difference will be marginal.

  5. ive not long had wireless connection from my dads pc and i use my computer up in my bedroom and i get a good connection although sometimes its abit slow

  6. Yes.  That is how wireless connections work.  You will have to have a wireless adapter for your PC so it can pick up the signal.

You can either buy an internal adapter, or a USB adapter that you simply plug into any USB port on your PC.  I have the USB adapter and it works fine.  The router and the adapter do not need to be the same brand to work successfully.

  7. Connection latency, quality, and bandwidth is not as great as a wired.

Unless you share big files across your network or are planning to place the desktop more than 3 rooms/floors away from your router, it should not be a noticeable problem.

    I'm on a MSI PC60G

Two floors above my router, and it's fine for internet usage.

Your internet bandwidth is probably not enough to challenge your wireless bandwidth.
