Wireless licience????

Can anyone remember having to be covered for using a radio and if so when would this have been and why was it stopped?

  1. I believe it is still required but most are included in the TV licence


  2. Before 1970 or 1971 you had to have a wireless licence if you didn't own a TV. By 1970 almost everyone owned a TV, so the wireless licence was considered redundant and it was abolished. The BBC has been funded by a licence fee since 1926. Until 1936 there wasn't a BBC television service and the majority of people didn't own a TV until the 1950s. So the original BBC licence fee was for a wireless.
