well to be honest wit you I do not know the difference between DSL or cable. All I know is that I have a laptop and no phone line at my apt. I am student and I need internet connection I checked out comcast for high speed internet ( not sure if it is DSL or cable!) they charge me 45$ and a 100$ instalation?! Don't you think that it would be a better idea for me to go for wireless then? it seems like 60$ would get me one. What do you suggest , where do you suggest I get the wireless connection from comcast or vrizon? Thankkkkks

  1. for "wireless", you need a network for your laptop to connect to. the network can be provided by a local wi-fi service (at a school, library, airport etc), or it can be provided by a wireless router in yiur home. your home router will be hooked up to your internet service provider, which could be via your cable compnay, or phone company, or someone else via your phone line.

What you're looking to compare is (probably) Verzion High Speed Internet vs Comcast High Speed Internet .

    Speedwise (fastest to lowest):

Verizon Fios High Speed Internet (via fiberoptic telephone line)

Comcast High Speed Internet (via Comcast digital cable)

Verzion DSL High Speed Internet (via regular phone line)

Each requires equipment to be installed.

If there is a phone jack, the phone company can tell you if you have dsl (or fios) access. they'll mail you the dsl hardware for you to install. Fios installation is up ther money wise, but is waaaaaaayyyyyy fast speedwise.

see http://www.high-speed-internet-access-gu...  for more info (they don't have fios on that page, but Verizon FiOS Internet Service is designed to provide Internet access with connection speeds of up to 50 Mbps (or 20 Mbps) downstream and 20 Mbps (or 5 Mbps) upstream...

  2. First off all you need cable or DSL, then you can choose if you want wireless or wired. As you said you have a laptop then order cable or dslline and with Wireless router/modem included with your order or just ask them there price and have shopping when you get there price. Because may be you get cheaper hardarware anywhere else.

  3. comcast has horror storys.

    1. dont pay to have it installed thats stupid

    2. do it yourself its very easy just a few cables to plug in

  4. Get the one that's least expensive for you.. but, you're going to have to have a modem of some kind in your house, so, go for the cable, as it is very much faster than dsl, according to my daughter, who has the dsl.. I have cable, and use my laptop, which is wireless, and it blazes..

  5. Wireless broadband is more expensive.  For the $60 a month plus taxes and fees, you get about 0.6 mb and they limit your downloads.  With cable internet (DSL requires a phone line) from Comcast at $45 a month you get about 6 mb or ten times greater bandwith.

Now... the difference is... with Verizon, you are always connected to the internet because its wireless. So anywhere you go outside .. your friends or school... you are connected.

With Comcast, you are only connected at home but the throughput is ten times greater.

Do you need to be connected at all times and would you be willing to have ten times less throughput to be connected at all times?

How you answer that question should determine the option with which you would be happiest.
