Wireless router problems?

I am trying to hook up a previously used Linksys wrg54t to my HP laptop that uses windows vista. My ISP requires me to put in a static IP address. You cant just let the computer obtain the ip address automatically.

Anyhow, i go to hook up the router and all the lights that are suppose to blink do. It will not add this router. It says the router is not recognized. I have hit the reset button on the back of the router which probably screwed everything up but still...

Also, I know last time I got it hooked up but then it didn't connect because I had something on the router configuration set incorrectly, like the DHCP or something. Now I cannot even get into the router configuration at all. Any ideas?? I want to slit my wrists. LOL.

  1. What you have to do is assign the IP address to the connection between the router and the ISP.  You can then allow the router to hand out addresses to each of the computers attached to it. Otherwise you would be limited to only having one computer attached to the router, which defeats the whole purpose of having the router. Contact your ISP. They will be able to walk you through configuring the router.

  2. By holding the button in on the back of the router, you reset the router back to the factory settings.

First you will need to attach a computer directly to the router using your ethernet connection and a cat 5 cable.  You can plug the cat 5 into any of the 4 Ethernet ports on the back of the router.

Open your web browser and enter 192.168.1.1 into the address line and click go.

To log in to the router, leave the user name field blank and for the password type-in admin.

On the setup page set the internet connection type to Static IP.

Enter your Static IP, Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS Servers provided by your service provider.

    Click Save.

Once the router reboots you will want to test the Internet connection while your computer is still connected to the ethernet port.  Use your web browser to confirm the internet is working.

Log back into the router and change the password to access the router.

Next you would want to setup your wireless network and enable wireless security on the router.

This various based on the firmware on your router.  I would recommend you visit this link to the support page for your model at www.linksys.com.

  3. Router problems can be some of the hardest to solve. But make sure that your Laptop is discoverable, that is that the router can "see" the wireless card on your laptop. Sometimes you just have to buy a new router.

"Discoverable" is in the wireless network settings on your laptop. It's just a thought.
