Wireless works on laptop but not desktop?

I use a D-Link DWA-110 Wireless Adapter (USB) to connect to the wireless network to use the internet...but now I need to use the internet on my desktop computer as I have to return the laptop soon. Both computers use XP Pro.

I have installed the wireless adapter drivers onto the desktop computer. When I put the adapter into my computer it says that it is "aquiaring (?) ip adress" for much longer then it would on my laptop, then it will say that it has good signal strength but has "limited or no connectivity". When I open Internet Explorer I get the "you are not connected" error page and I am also unable to use internet services (such as iTunes music store). I ran ipconfig and was told the following:

In Connection DNS Suffix it was blank

It had "autoconfig ip address" (with an address) whereas my laptop has just "ip address"

It has a subnet address (same one as laptop)

And it has no default gateway.

I tried pinging www.google.com but to no avail and I have also reformated

  1. try to restart your computer. if it doesn't work, call on whatever company is that...

  2. If the ip address you are receiving on your desktop looks like 169.x*x.x*x.x*x then you are not communicating with the router.  Windows uses 169.x*x.x*x.x*x addresses automatically when it cannot locate a DHCP server (located in your router) or does not have it's network configuration manually configured.

You may want to check the following:

    * Is the DHCP function turned ON in your router?

    * Is your network card configured to receive an ip address automatically?   You can check by going to:

START > (right click) Network Connections > Properties > (right click) LAN > Properties > (double click) Internet Properties (TCP/IP)

Insure both IP and DNS options are set to auto.

    * Can you ping your gateway ip address?

Hopefully, this will get you started in the right direction...good luck!
