Question:

Wiring a speaker selector?

I am building a homemade speaker selector. I have speakers on my back porch and also in my living room. I want to be able to run either the outside or the inside, or have the option of running both at the same time. I wired my switches as shown in the picture. The sound comes out of the speakers but it won't let me play just the inside or the outside by themselves. No matter the combination of the switches, both sets of speakers play. I cant figure out where I went wrong in the wiring. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a rough sketch of the wiring.

  1. the problem is with the way you have 'both' wired.

you've created a straight 'V' path to both speakers.

so regardless what speakers you select theres alway a connection to the other speakers

lets say you select porch speakers, the audio signal will travel up to the speakers then travel down the 'both' wires to the switch then to the living room speakers.

and will do the same thing if you select the living room speakers.

i drew an 'audio path' on the sketch you made to help understand what im saying.

  2. Radio Shack makes a nice unit that will do this with no problem:

Most home stores now have switches designed for speakers also.

I tried to find a schematic online, but I could not find one.
