Question:

Wiring a switched outlet with 4 switches?

I have a circuit with a switched outlet. The power goes into the outlet and then to a three way switch. There are then 2 ,4-way switches and the final 3-way. I want to add another outlet to the box with the first switch. I want that switch to then control the new outlet AND the original outlet. The other switches should still only control the original outlet.

My need for this is that it controls a dust collection system. So I want all the switches to continue controlling the shopvac. Now I want the added outlet at the first switch to turn on the shopvac AND a tool at the same time.

Thanks in advance!

  1. You don't say where the power comes off the switch

system to the outlet. That's where you connect the

hot line for the new outlet.

Otherwise you have to rewire the whole thing.

(Remember you will be running the tool and the

shop-vac on the same circuit. What are the loads?)

  2. Yes it can be done, The first switch needs to be changed from a single pole double throw switch ( 3 way)  to a double pole double throw switch. the new outlet must be wired to one side of the double pole while the old circuit is wired to the other side. Use a jumper between the commons on the first switch to accomplish this.  The switch may need to be special ordered from a supply house, specify color, voltage and amp rating, also that it is to control a motor.
