Question:

Wiring a two speed house fan

Here is my problem, I have a sears whole house fan and pulled all the wiring out of the wall when I remodeled. I did write down where all the wires went, but I wrote it on the back of the wall after I tore down the drywall. I put up new drywall and covered my diagram and I didn't figure this as being as difficult as it actually is. I have two wires that supply power into my double gang box. I have a timer with two terminating points (basically a switch) and a double switch that has the option of "high" or "low" and the other switch that has "timer on" or continuous on". The double switch has one termination point on one side of it by the "high" option and three termination points on the other side calling out "1, 2, 3". The wires that are going to the fan are just a pir of black & white with a ground. I don't want an answer like "call a professional" because I'm capable of correcting the problem if I had a schematic (which I don't). So if someone has come across this before please help me out. I do have a meter and have run continuity checks between all the termination points too, but still didn't figure this one out. I did try to hook it up directly with the power (avoiding the timer and put it on a regular toggle switch) but that kept popping the breaker for some reason.

  1. 1. connect all the white ( neutral )  wires together.

    2. connect the power ( black ) wire to the timer in.

    3. connect the timer out to the double switch high

    4. connect double switch 1,2,3 and the black wire of the fan together.

Make sure you turn off the circuit breaker before you do this.

  2. The schematic that came with the fan is important.  You may be able to get one from Sears, maybe even on line.  The pair of Black would be low and high speed. Since you are switching the power 123, one should be off, one high, and one low.  The probable reason for the circuit breaker pop is that you have both fan speeds on.  Hope you didn't burn it out!  You give us electricians job security.  For sure don't call a professional until you start a fire and the house burns down.  Because you did it yourself, the insurance will negate the policy.

  3. Most major appliances have a schematic on the inside of the access panel. If yours doesn't you may be able to find one on-line. You may have to search the timer separately.
