Question:

Wiring help installing after-market stereo?

I have everything pretty much straight, but I have a few questions.

The yellow cable which is 12v battery constant, I have two connections where I can hook this up and wasn't sure which one to use.

One of them is 15 amp memory backup lead.

The other is 3 amp bus power lead.

Which one am I supposed to use and what is the difference?

The other question has to do with the antenna power, the blue cable. Do I need to use this? I already have one connector coming from my car which hooks to an adapter and that adapter goes right into the back of my stereo. Is there any need for the antenna power?

And last, I'm using gel-tab wire connectors to make my connections, is that sufficient? It looks so much better than tape and twisting the wires together.

Thanks, 5 stars to whoever can answer me fast/accurate.

  1. use the 15 amp lead. If you don't have a power antenna, just "cap" the wire so it doesn't short out and don't use it. Some cars (euro-imports)do have a built in FM booster in the antenna that requires power to operate correctly. If your getting the radio signals in clear I don't think you have anything to worry about.

    cant go wrong with gel-tabs.

  2. the memory back up lead is probably for your stereo not to lose memory settings, that wire should go to a wire in your car that always has power, the 12v constant goes with a wire in your car that has power only with ignition on. to make sure test one of the wire from your car with ignition on or off and see if it loses power. for the antenna, yes you have to connect the wire to another wire from your car, your antenna is supposed to be hook to the back of your stereo, that's only for signal/reception, if your antenna is not power then there is no need for the blue wire.
