Wisconsin Badgers’ John Clay still uncertain for week 12
Wisconsin Badgers running back John Clay’s status for the club’s week 12 match-up against the Michigan State Wolverines is still uncertain.
Clay is struggling with a sprained knee, an injury he suffered in his team’s win over the Purdue Boilermakers on 6 November. The youngster was forced out of the squad’s week 11 drumming of the Indiana Hoosiers, in which the Badgers rolled over the squad,
winning 83-20, the highest point total from the school in 95 years.
Clay has not yet been able to practice with the team, but head coach Bret Bielema mentioned that Wisconsin is hoping to get him on the practice field this week and may be able to use him against the Wolverines.
“I don’t know if we’ll have him for Tuesday [practice], but I do expect him to get a limited amount of work this week.” Bielema told the Associated Press.
Wisconsin’s running game clearly did not struggle against the Hoosiers in week 11, which can be attributed to their depth at the running back position. Clay’s absence gave back-ups Montee Ball and James White more carries. The Badgers have used their three
backs effectively all season and are currently the only team in the Bowl Championship Series to have three running backs with over 500 rushing yards.
“I don’t know if we’ll have that three-headed thing this week because John, I think, won’t be at full strength, but when that situation does pop up, whether it’s the next game or in the bowl game opportunity, it’s something you’ve got to be smart about when
and how you use them,” said Bielema. “I think it’s hard to get three guys in rhythm all the way through, but you can definitely go a strong two and the third one comes in when he’s needed.”
So far this season Clay has managed 929 yards and 13 touchdowns.
