Question:

Wisdom Teeth Extractions?

I'm 21 years old, and tomorrow my dentist(NOT ORAL SURGEON) will be extracting my two wisdom teeth on the upper and lower jaw on my right side. I'm terrifed of going to dentist, let alone having my teeth pulled. None of my teeth are impacted, and they have broken thru the gum. I will be using laughing gas & novacane. Can anyone please tell me will I feel any pain during the process of my teeth getting pulled? Are they really YANKING them out w/ their strength? Or is a instrument being used that just latches on your tooth and pops it out itself? How many shots will I have to get?? Please help me. I go in tomorrow @ 11:00am. So terrifed. Please serious answers only!!

  2. Don't worry-I went through the EXACT same thing in March of this year except it was my two on the left side.

The procedure itself really has very little discomfort. I think what you should prepare yourself for in terms of the procedure is the strangeness of the sensation of not being able to feel that side of your face. At times,  in the beginning you will feel as though you can't swallow properly, but this is just a sensation that will pass.

After the procedure, you will of course be sore-use ice packs to prevent swelling, and if they prescribe pain pills take those too. Avoid eating anything solid for a day or two, and don't eat anything too hot or cold.

You will be fine-don't worry :)

  3. Don't worry, hun. I didn't have my wisdom teeth taken out, but I had four teeth extracted last Tuesday. They numb you, so you'll only feel pressure. I'm not gonna lie and say only a "bit" of pressure, but for it me it was a WHOLE lot. It just scared me more than anything because I haven't had teeth extracted before. This was for my braces, but you have nothing to worry about. After the procedure, you'll probably have some pain and definitely some bleeding. Be careful of Dry Socket, the dentist should educate about that, but it happends when you dislodge the clot that has formed. Do not spit, rinse, or swish for atleast 48 hrs. Do not drink through a straw or SMOKE. Stick to some soft foods!

  4. No they don't yank at all. They gently and slowly work it out by sort of wiggling them a bit.

They have special instruments that enable them to grip the tooth properly.

You won't feel any pain. The novocaine and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) will make you feel numbed and relaxed.  You'll probably have to get 1 shot per tooth, and often a shot at the inside of the jaw because the nerves from the teeth run through the jaw.

Afterwards, when it wears off, it will probably feel painful but taking Motrin will usually be enough.

Relax. It sounds much worse than it really is

  5. I just had my wisdom teeth out on Friday, except I had all four of them out at my dentist's office.  I had freezing needles, and for me, they did one needle on either side of my gums (inner right, outer right, inner left outer left) for top and bottom. I also had extra on my right side because the dentist tested the freezing and i could feel whatever was going on (before the surgery)

I had bone involvement in 3 of my teeth, so they had to drill into my jaw, but I honestly didn't feel anything, except for a lot of pressure, but no pain.  The first tooth, you can't really tell what they are doing, but they just use a metal tool to sort of pry it out, using your molars as leverage.

You probably won't feel super amazing for a couple of days, but if you keep the ice every 15 minutes for the first 48 hours, you should be better in no time.  Good luck!

  6. Chill out.  I had an impacted wisdom tooth extracted a month ago, and i'm 35.  The procedure lasted a couple minutes and I didn't feel a thing, probably just a quick prick from the novacane, but that's all.  I took painkillers for the dy of the surgery and never really felt any pain.  I had a difficult time chewing for a couple days
