Question:

Wisdom Teeth Question...?

I got my braces off about three - four days ago. I've had my wisdom teeth growing in since I was ten (I'm twelve now/ in a month I'll be thirteen). Why do you have to get your wisdom teeth pulled? How do you know if you don't if you don't have to? If you have a retainer with your wisdom teeth's mold in it do you still have to get it pulled? What happens if you don't get it pulled? Any other information!

P.S. My mom is a nurse and doesn't know about that and says it'd be very interesting to know!

  1. Typically people get their wisdom teeth pulled because they crowd the other teeth and make them crooked.  It is a matter of your jaw not being large enough to accomodate all the teeth.

Another reason is that they don't come in right.  Sometimes they come in crooked, or even sideways.

  2. Many people have jaws that are not large enough for wisdom teeth.  This usually means the teeth often become impacted (grow into the molars in front of them).  Other times they come in a very absurd direction.  If they can't "breach" through the gum, this means they are just pointless other than a collection place for bacteria.  Most people whose wisdom teeth grow in completely have trouble brushing their wisdom teeth because they are so far back.  Once again...  Bacteria collection.  Wisdom teeth can harm the teeth around them.  My dad's grew in and were scraping along the inside of his mouth, which was very painful.

So if yours grows in as normally as possible, then you might have a hard time brushing them.  Then you could have a cavity to deal with.

If you do get a retainer with wisdom teeth (that have breached the gums), then it will be molded to fit your wisdom teeth too.  I think this is why many dentists decide to pull wisdom teeth out before or during braces.

And, yes...  Wisdom teeth are the mandibular third molars.

Here's my experience...  I got braces when I was 11, got them out at 13.  I'm 19 now and been wearing retainers since the braces came out.  Got my wisdom teeth out a week ago - three of them, two of which were impacted.  The third never broke through the gum, so my two retainers both fit perfectly still.  I'd recommend getting them out.  my mouth is so tiny, there was no room for wisdom teeth in my mouth anyway!  It's an easy procedure, it's just the recovery that takes work.  But it's definitely manageable and I've felt great.

Good luck if you decide to get yours out!

  3. are you sure they are not ur 12 year old molars? no you don't have them pulled

  4. so i just got my wisdom teeth pulled about 5 weeks ago. they take x-rays of your teeth to see if they will be a problem, by that i mean if they are going to grow in crooked so they misalign your teeth. mine weren't doing that, but they pulled them because of family history. my brother and both my parents had problems with them.

  5. most people who wore braces have to get them out because there is not enough room for them. if you needed braces in the first place, your mouth was probably crowded which caused the need for braces.

the wisdom teeth will put pressure on your other teeth, and especially if you wore braces, your teeth may be easier to move and the wisdom teeth will push them around, causing all that orthodontic work to get undone!

They may be starting to come in at 15, but they often take a long time-i doubt it was your wisdom teeth at 12-that was probably other molars.
