I am getting my wisdom teeth removed soon and I am very nervous. Any experiences you'd like to share concerning wisdom teeth extractions? Thanks!

  1. No soft coating it,  wisdom teeth hurt when they come out.... they can put you to sleep during the procedure to make it easier to REMOVE the teeth, but afterward, you are going to be quite sore... NO FOOD at all for several HOURS.. (maybe even overnight) and then only  clear liquids until probably the next day when only soft foods should be eaten for a day or 2.   No spicy stuff and limit your salt..   The best thing I can advise you is, a few days before the extractions,  get yourself some sandwich sized ziploc baggies and crush up some ice cubes and seal them in the baggies (about 8 will do fine)... when you come home from the extractions, place one baggie of ice on each side of your cheeks ... 20 minutes ON and 20 minutes off.... until the next morning... this will help with SOME of the pain and also reduce the swelling...   Some people experience little pain and others a LOT... it all depends on your tolerance and the type of work needed to extract the teeth... (just an easy YANK and no cutting, pain might be minimal).... doctor will also give you a script for pain killers prior to leaving his office....  Good luck... in a couple of days, it will all be nothing but a memory...

  2. I work in an oral surgeons office, so i see this all the time. They'll put an iv in you, and through the iv they will put some drugs to knock you out. you'll be under for about a half hour, maybe a little more, a little less. They'll take your teeth out and you'll feel sleepy for the rest of the day. The swelling in your cheeks will come from the bottom ones. if your missing one, it wont swell on that side and if your missing both bottoms you won't swell at all. after you eat, always swish water in your mouth (like mouthwash) to get rid of all the food particles so there won't be dry sockets. Dry sockets are very avoidable, just take your antibiotics and swish and you should be fine! Also make sure to follow your doctors instructions very carefully! The swelling will take about a week to go down, and then you'll be back to normal.

    good luck and God bless!!

  3. When they remove your wisdom teeth you aren't going to have wisdom left so you are going to be dumb, well depends if you were smart in the first place....lol

  4. It helps if they knock you out so you are asleep. Have some soft food around. Take the pain killers they offer if you need them.

I was honestly fine. No complications, and I went to work the next day. Good luck :)

  5. I had three wisdom teeth removed at once.  They hadn't 'erupted' yet (they hadn't poked out through the skin) so I had to go to a dental surgeon.  He gave me a general anesthetic and the anesthetic made me sicker than the actual operation.  I was hardly sore at all where the teeth had been removed, and the sites healed quickly.  I had to go back in a week to get the stitches removed, but I understand these days they use stitches that just dissolve by themselves after a few days.

The other wisdom tooth was removed years later by the dentist just pulling it out.  It's not pleasant to have a tooth pulled but it's not a big deal.  Again, I wasn't sore, it healed up quickly.  He gave me novicane, which was all I needed. He held my head in one arm and rocked the tooth back and forth until it was loose so it didn't take a lot of pulling to come out.

Technology continues to advance.  Every year these things get simpler, more painless, etc.  So don't worry about it.  If you get all tense you just make things worse.  You'll survive.  8^)

  6. you will be fine.ihave to get 3 more pulled, the dentist is not as bad as everyone says.  Pain medication they give you, helps alot. They numb the area before they do it and before you know it you are done.  really nothing to worry about....GOOD LUCK

  7. Just relax and don't stress out about it. It's nothing to worry about. I really hate dental work, so getting a surgery in my mouth was no fun for me to think about either. But I just had four of my wisdom teeth removed four weeks ago and I can tell you that it is not worth worrying about.

    This is the main procedure:

They will give you a gas mask for oxygen and they also say they will give you some laughing gas. Most of the time, the laughing gas will make you feel a bit light-headed and relaxed so you won't even notice if they put the IV in you. For me, the laughing gas had no effect on me so I was completely conscious for the IV. The surgeon put a rubber band around my arm so they could see the veins more clearly and it was a tiny pinch and the IV was injected. It feels just like a small shot. You will fall asleep in literally less than half a minute so you won't even get much of a chance to see anything. The actual operation takes about 5-6 minutes per tooth. And after they are finished, it will usually take you about 10 minutes to wake up. But the whole thing really only feels like a minute.

As long as you use general anesthesia, and take your painkillers on a tight schedule, and follow your doctor's instructions on post-operative care, you will be fine. I never had any pain with the surgery, and no swelling. So, don't worry about it. Your nervousness is actually the hardest part of the procedure. That's what will make you most uncomfortable. But trust me, once you get into that chair and they put you on the IV, you won't even get a chance to worry about it. You will fall asleep and a minute later, you're done and out of there. Really.

Good luck with your surgery and hope you have a fast recovery =)
