Question:

Wisdom teeth and cavities....?

ok. well i went to my dentist today, and found out some rather interesting things. first, i am getting my wisdom teeth-at 14. they took a full mouth x-ray and confirmed they were coming. when i was in there they said that i should get them removed right away, since the roots aren't fully developed. since my mom didn't come, they couldn't do the operation. is i think it is a good idea to get my wisdom teeth out, but i never know if i will get anymore (since people usually get 4) if i do get them removed anytime soon, would laughing gas be a good choice, or is it better just to get my mouth numbed because the roots aren't fully developed.

second, i have 8 cavities. i dont mind flossing, but it just isn't fun. what is a way to help heal my cavities, and help prevent future ones?

thanks so much for all you're help, i would really love to keep a beautiful smile! :D

  1. Especially as you have an allergy to the injections then gas seems to be the best option. You would need a strong dose of laughing gas to knock you out and then you won't need injections. I normally had that done for anything involved when I was under 18 and never had any real problem with it.

It sounds like the wisdom teeth are still impacted in which case they will have to cut the gum to dig them out. You don't want to be awake through that and it can be extremely painful.

Re cavities. If you are brushing your teeth and flossing etc and still getting cavities then judging by my own teens then it could simply be you are eating too much chocolate! Excuse the cynicism, but it is a common problem.

  2. The only remedy for your cavities are fillings, dear.  There's no magic repair otherwise.  And you may as well get used to the idea of flossing if you want to keep them in your mouth.  They make little flossers that are one time use, then toss- which make the job easier to do.  Daily brushing and flossing are the preventative methods to avoid cavities.  That and going easy on things like soda and sticky foods.  Your "reaction" wasn't allergic, thats about standard for a numb lip.  You probably bruised it while it was numb, and couldn't realize it was happening.  As far as the wisdom tooth extraction, it's a lot easier to do right as the teeth are coming in, because no- they aren't rooted into the jaw bone and it's much easier to do.  A lot easier to recover from as well.  You get one wisdom tooth on each side, top and bottom- which is where the magic number 4 comes from.  Most folks only get 4 total, and they don't regrow again.  There is also the chance you will only form these two- it's not that unusual to see.  My daughter had two from the bottom taken out using a local anesthetic, and did just fine.  In fact, she had them out in the morning and went out with friends to a movie that night.   My son had one that was impacted against another tooth- no roots, but jammed against the other.  He had his out under sedation.  Again, though, he did really well and was out and about next day just fine.  I'd recommend getting them removed.   Just have your mom go with you to discuss it all with the dentist.  The shots to numb you for the removal are no worse than any of the others to work in the back of the mouth, so it's not like they will kill you to do it that way if the dentist expects a simple extraction.  If it will be more involved than that, then perhaps sedation is a good idea.  Even with the laughing gas, you still get the shots- the gas just makes you not really care.  But you already had shots similar and didn't have a major problem, so I don't think you'd need it.  I suggest doing it soon, not waiting.  Once wisdom teeth- or any other tooth, for that matter- erupts through the gums, it begins to form roots in the jawbone.  That removal makes a hole in the bone that has to heal as well as the damage to the gums- and makes for a longer recovery.  Problems with wisdom teeth never improve with waiting, so there's no good reason to wait really.  Meanwhile, I suggest you get yourself a package of the flossers and get used to the routine if you really want to keep a beautiful smile.
