I am getting my top wisdom teeth out on sunday. They arent impacted but need to come out. Has anyone had experience with your wisdom teeth being pulled out without being knocked out? I got my bottom ones taken out 10 years ago but those were impacted and I was put to sleep so I am very nervous.

  1. Wow, tooth extraction on a Sunday!  Well, any day that would be a bummer.  I've had many extractions--too many!--and I'm a real chicken about dental work--so, here's what to expect:  you'll get a little numbing gel put on the gums before they inject you with "novocaine" (actually, it will probably xylocane, works the same) once you're all numbed up they'll pull the teeth. You'll hear icky sounds, but only briefly. They may have to put in a stitch, but not usually.  I always ask for nitrous gas before 'cuz I'm such a scaredy-cat, (some dentists won't give it) If you get gas, breath as normally as posible, it works best tht way & your head will clear as soon as you stop breathing it.  If you're super stressed, some have short acting tranquilizers/hynotics Ask for & take the pain meds as prescribed (and don't settle for just extra strength tylonol, get vicoden/perocet)  Follow the after care instructions they give you.  ie:  don't eat or drink anything for a few hours, don't drink through a straw or smoke, if the bleeding doesn't stop moisten a tea bag & apply. Remember to moistion!  Dry gauze or tea bags will pull out any clot forming, you don't want that. It's the tannic acid in tea (not herbal) that helps close the extraction site & it helps with any nausia you might have from the vicodin.  Take it easy!    Don't' get your blood pressure up, again, it's the bleeding thing.  Good luck!
