  1. No, cotton gauze do not cause dry socket after a tooth extraction.

What can cause a dry socket is that if you spit the blood that is in your mouth, because that might dislodge the blood cloth in your socket. Instead, you must let the blood drop out of your mouth without doing and suction action with your mouth.

What can cause mostly a dry socket is smoking. So if you are a smoker, do not smoke for at least 72 hours.

  2. Gauze doesn't cause dry socket.  Drinking out of a straw or any kind of suction action is what causes it.  No worries :)

  3. You need to keep the gauze in longer. The socket needs to remain moiste while it is trying to heal. If you want it to clot, the fastest and best way, stop taking out the gauze and putting in fresh. Only take it out when you are supposed too. Change it only when you are supposed too. It's trying to build up a good clot in there that will prevent dry socket. Of course, if there's too much blood, than it doesn't hurt to change it now and then. But not too much. K?

  4. No NO NO!!!!.....a dry socket is caused when in the first couple of hours of getting a tooth extracted you lose the blood clot that is formed.  Either from spitting or rinsing or even smoking or certain blood thinners/medications.  The gauze is placed in the area so you can bite down and stop the bleeding and help form a clot.  if most of the bleeding has stopped (it should have by now) you can  stop using the gauze.  just don't rinse your mouth, spit or drink from a straw and absolutely DO not smoke
