How painful is it to get your wisdom teeth taken out? I'm 18 and getting mine out soon, and I'm scared it's going to be so painful afterward.

  1. Mine was easy.

  2. yeah it hurts man lmao

  3. My friend had it done and she was pretty messed up about it for a while (cheeks got all swollen...poor thing =/). But she doesn't complain about the discomfort they caused her before the extraction, so I'd say it must be painful but worth it. Anyways, the probably don't do it because all dentists are secretly sadists.

Good luck! =] You'll do fine.

  4. it hurts at first but its seriously not that bad yoll be fine and youll love the outcome youll have nice straight teeth and u wont have to worry about it in the future................hope i could help! :D

  5. I didn't even need painkillers for mine. You really can't say how bad it will hurt because it all depends on the person.

  6. It will be a snap. It's no biggie, so don't worry. =) Recently I had to have a root canal! Gaaah! Well, I had 3 numbing shots and it still hurt, so finally the doc gave me a shot directly into the tooth nerve (straight down into the tooth itself. Can you imagine my horror!?). Then he gave me another. Then he said "Wow! Your teeth have really deep roots and great nerves; I'll have to give you another shot". I was like "whaaat!?", except I think it came out like "uuuhhhhaawwah".

My whole face was numb (I felt like some stupid pumpkin head) and my neck as well. I was slurring my words and thinking bad thoughts... plus he had fried okra breath. Eeewww.

But, all's well that end's well. No harm done. And that was a root canal. Having a tooth yanked..? Piece of cake. =)

  7. If you don't take the pain medication they prescribe in a timely enough manner for it to take effect before what they give you during the procedure wears off, it will hurt.  Other than that, you'll be fine.  Stick with soft foods and remember to take your pain medication.  Don't talk frequently and expect some serious swelling.  If possible, sleep through the healing process as much as you can.

  8. I'm 15 and I just had mine removed yesterday morning and it's not bad at all. Just make sure to request getting put completely asleep with general anesthesia. You will fall right asleep and you will not feel any pain. You will wake up in what feels like a minute and everything is done. For me, I felt no pain afterwards because I immediately took my painkillers and kept taking them on a tight schedule. And I am not even swollen at all and it's the second day. But everybody's experience is different. My main suggestion is to be put to sleep for the procedure, and for afterward, take three Motrins plus one Vicodin that they should prescribe you. This will keep the pain away. Good luck.

  9. I almost didn't want to answer this because if I am truthful then it will scare you even more.  Ask for pain meds ahead of time.  I went to an oral surgeon and all he said was to take Tylenol.  I sat and cried and cried.  Silently though as it hurt to move my mouth at all.  My mom finally took pity on me and gave me one of the percodans that my sister had been prescribed when she had her wisdom teeth taken out.  She had gone to a different doctor as she was younger and still on my parents medical/dental.  I was 22 and had my own medical/dental and didn't go to the same doctor.  Even with the percodan it hurt, but not nearly as bad as without it.  Some of the worst pain I've ever felt in my life.

But keep in mind, my wisdom teeth were partially buried in my jaw bones (I guess, it's what they told my mom as I was actually put to sleep while they were doing it so they talked to my mom afterwords) and it was pretty hard for them to get them out.  Not everyone has that problem so it could be a lot less painful for you than it was for me.  Plus, I had all four done at once.  Maybe it hurts a lot less if you only have two at a time removed.

I would still make sure that your doctor is willing to give you a prescription for some powerful medicine before I had it done though.

Oh, I did only end up needing two pills all total though.  I took one and then about 6 hours later I took another one.  When I woke up the next day, it was bearable so I went back to Tylenol.

  10. It really isn't bad at all! I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled Thursday morning. I am 18 and was freaking out about it so much. I thought about having my parents re-schedule it numerous times, but then I thought I might as well get it over with.

Thursday morning before I went, my doctor had me take 2 pills that made me really relaxed  and made me laugh a lot. It made me feel less nevous.  They called me back and I could barely walk so I had to hold the nurse's hand. Haha. I remember slowly getting into the chair and my heart was beating so fast. They stuck an IV in my hand of General Anastesia.  I was out in maybe 20 seconds.  The only thing I remember before waking up was them putting a blindfold on my eyes and the doctor sticking 4 shots into my mouth, although I couldn't feel pain.

I do, however, remember waking up in the middle of it but I was still out of it so I couldn't feel pain, just a little pressure. Then I was passed out again and next thing I knew it I woke up with gauz in my mouth.

The doctor asked me, "How long do you think that took?"

    My guess was, "5 minutes?"

And he said, "Nope. 2 hours!"

    And I was like wow!

I had to be wheeled out of the doctor's office because I was too loopy to walk. And immediatley once I got home my bleeding stopped. I took a pain medication, left an icepack on my cheek while I slept, and woke up with my boyfriend bringing me a milkshake! I couldn't suck out of the straw of course but I had to use a spoon. You're not supposed to suck for a few weeks I guess after you have them removed. All I could eat was jello and slim fast.

The rest of the day was a peice of cake, I layed in bed all day and slept. I moved from one pain killer to some Tylenol and IBprofin. Around 2 AM I had a little more bleeding.

Friday I woke up feeling really sore in my jaw, but just take pain mediciations and you'll be fine. Today I slept some more and eventually went out for a bit. I ended up eating some McDonald's fries with no problems. I just had a hard cookie not too long ago. My cheeks are only a little bit swollen but im thinking tomorrow everything will be back to normal, hopefully.

It's really not that bad as everyone says it is, but then again, everyone IS different.

Good luck and don't stress over it! =)

  11. A little story for you, I had my upper wisdoms taken out with a local, bad Idea, the Dentist had these big weenie fingers, and as he pulled a tooth I heard the word no one wants to hear, OOPS I felt the tooth lodge in the back of my throat, instead of using a tool to get the tooth he put his big fingers down my throat trying to get it out, It was all I could do not to puke!! so when I had my bottom wisdom teeth pulled, I had them knock me out, It was great!!!! thats the way you should go! No pain!! you wake up, it;s done! good luck

  12. OK look....I am a big chicken!  I waited like 15 years to take them out and they were impacted that's how chicken I was!

This is what they did...the dentist numbed me REALLY GOOD.... then he pulled them out while I was awake....I SWEAR it was so easy!  I was very nervous and thought I was going to faint, not from the pain but from being scared!  It didnt hurt at all...I do believe that wisdom teeth do not have roots...they even had to crack one to get it out and I SWEAR it didnt hurt....now when the numbness wore off it sucked a little.... they will tell you what to take I dont remember what I took but you will live I SWEAR!  :)  Good luck!

  13. I had mine pulled out last month, all four of 'em. I will answer your question depending how your wisdom teeth are oriented. I mean, are they situated in normal position or kinda crooked or slant pressing the other tooth/teeth. My three wisdom teeth were normal, I didn't have a problem after surgery with my other three teeth  but the one that was crooked, was really bad. The Dental specialist had to cut it into two then pull 'em out, much worse when he pulled it out and there's still part of the tooth left in the root, so he had to dig deeper in the gum.

I was bleeding for three whole days and was swollen for 2 weeks. I wasn't able to eat at all for the whole first week. Lost 10 lbs (which was bad for me because I am already skinny).

I really thought I could still go to my work after the surgery ( I was overconfident) but after few minutes of the surgery, I felt that my cheek was getting bigger and bigger. Until I was not able to come to work and called in sick for another day.

    Some advice:

    1. Buy the presciption first, like pain killer( this is aw) before the surgery

    2. Put ice pack right away on your jaws/cheeck areas after the surgery.

    3. Always remember to KEEP biting hard the gauze the dentist will put in your mouth to help stop bleeding.

    4. Have somebody to take care of you will recuperating( which i didnt have LOL)

    5. DON'T get addicted to the Pain killer(Vicodin)

I told my dentist before the surgery, " I am not worried about the surgery but the AFTER surgery". And I was right, but my dentist made everything better. She took care of me in the entire process of healing..

Well Good luck and God BLess!
