Question:

Wisdom tooth/oragel?

I'm using Oragel for my wisdom tooth to numb the pain until the dentist later this week. I put it on, like lather it like no other and then 10 minutes later, if I'm lucky to get 10 minutes, it's not numb anymore. Has this happened to anyone else? And why would it be doing this? Everyone I talked to it's stayed numb for a good couple hours. HELP! The pain is becoming unbearable. Thanks.

  1. oragel is typically used on infants, so it is less potent than other numbing gels.

try taking ibuprofen or ask your dentist for a prescription pain killer.

  2. I tried that stuff once and it didn't even help a little.  If it is that bad you should call your dentist and tell them about it.  Maybe they will write you a prescription for pain pills to hold you over.  I would take some over-the-counter pain relief pills and see if that helps at all.

Sorry, mouth pain is the worst.

EDIT:  Call the dentist and see what they can do for you.  If you are getting your wisdom teeth taken out this week they are going to be prescribing pain medication then so see if you can get it today.  Remember not to operate heavy machinery!

  3. the gel is only numbing the gum not the tooth in the bone so only a dentist can treat this sorry !

  4. Oragel is good for what it's good for, but that's all.  If it were a really effective anaesthetic, it likely would be dangerous, particularly for small children.

I have no training in dentistry, but I'd guess your wisdom tooth is hurting below skin level, so Oragel 's action would be more limited yet.  Can you take Ibuprofin (like Motrin)? That's the usual choice for dental pain. Tylenol (similar to aspirin) doesn't work nearly as well for dental pain.

For routine care with my dentist, I have to wait weeks or months, but they set aside time for urgently painful cases.  Perhaps it would be possible to advance your appointment time?
