Wise demonstrates Swadden's wisdom at 2010 Kennett Cup
The £1000 2010 Kennett Cup Final over 640m delighted the crowd last night at Poole. Only five of the six qualifiers from last week participated in the race after Ullid Turbo was pulled. The departure of Turbo left trainer Peter Swadden with his hounds representing 40 per cent of the field, and they took full advantage taking first and second while tying a record in the process.
Wise Totty, 11-10 race favourite, took the lead away from No Call on the second bend and didn’t look back while tying the three-year-old race record of 38.74. Totty’s half-brother and kennelmate, Wise Maldini, finished in second, 3½ lengths behind Totty.
The Wise brothers showed the crowd just how effective a trainer Swadden is as they not only finished in the top two spots, but they also crushed the rest of the competitors. Maldini finished a whopping 9¾ lengths ahead of third place finisher, Fraziers Clone. Add the 3½ lengths Totty had on Maldini, and the race winner finished with an incredible 13¼ length lead over third place Clone.
Totty has been running A2 races at Swindon over the last few months, but after her demonstration at the Kennett Cup it seems inevitable that the two-year-old hound will be running A1 races soon.
While the race for first and second wasn’t close, the remaining three hounds put on a show for third spot. Behind Clone by just a shoulder was No Call, the one-time race leader, and just behind her in fifth by a head was Swift Stirling.
Earlier on the card was the Poole Stayers Stakes, another 640m race that had an original racer drop out. This time it was Adriatic missing the race, but since it wasn’t a final he was replaced in the third trap by Steady Pace, who made little impact on the race finishing in last place, more than three seconds behind the winner.
It turned out that 13-2 longshot, Right Pick, was the right pick in this one as he got off to an excellent start and took the early lead. Gold Digger made it close, but even over the long distance she couldn’t quite catch up to Pick finishing a head behind him in second.
The two 2-1 joint favourites, Sapphirine and Bower Ace Hi, took third and fifth respectively, neither looked particularly impressive in this race. Caloona Clay finished in between the favourites in fourth.
