The legendary off-spinner, Muttiah Muralitharan, has confessed that his desire to become the first bowler to claim 1000 Test wickets urged him to delay his retirement from International cricket.
The Kandy-born spinner remained a great performer for his country throughout his cricket career. After serving http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 for almost 19 years, the great bowler took retirement from five-day cricket following
his last Test against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, in July last year.
However, his final good bye to International cricket came after playing the finale of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Cup 2011. Murali finished his vintage after claiming 800 scalps, the highest wicket-taker so far in the
longer version of the game.   
In a recent interview to a cricket magazine, Murali admitted that that he wanted to be the only cricketer to cross 1000-mark but injury threats eventually pushed him to change his mind.
"I did think long and hard about becoming the first man to take 1,000 Test wickets. I had decided to retire after the game against India but had second thoughts after taking eight wickets to reach 800,"
said Muralitharan.
According to his guess, it might have taken another four to five years in order to reach the milestone. Therefore, he decided to step back since it was too much to ask from an ageing body.
"Sri Lanka play only about eight Tests a year and at the rate I was taking wickets I would have needed to keep playing until I was 43. In the end my body told me to stop. I thought to myself, 'Why go on?
You have achieved everything there is to achieve in the game and you don't have to prove anything to anyone,” added the 39-year-old cricketer.
The off-spinner also shared that he still has a lot of passion and love for the game but no one can continue playing till the day, he wants to. Talking about his future plans, Murali did not gave a clear
answer, however, he singled that he will quit all forms of cricket after completing his stint with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gloucestershire-c785 in 2012.
