Wisteria plant question?

New homeowner, found a wisteria plant in backyrd. Has these long green bean like pods. Can I cut them off, plant them or dont touch them because they will affect the growth of the flowers for next spring? Need help--thank you

  1. Pods should be cut off along with almost all of this year's growth.  Wisteria are man eating plants and if not hacked back regularly will take over the garden.  The flower best on buds closer to the main trunk.


  2. Wisteria are very hardy. In some areas they are almost as hardy as kudzu.   We trim back our wisteria twice per year, once in late Spring, and once in the Autumn.  We've actually hacked it back quite far and feared that we killed it, but this is probably nearly impossible. Don't worry about harming this one, about nothing you do will affect the growth. We trimmed ours a few weeks ago at the base of the tree, but it sprouted new growth overnight. Amazing.  If you would like new wisteria, just keep an eye out close to the trunk of the original.  Do keep it cut back as they tend to take over nearby trees and plants, and look to grow on anything.
