Witch is the starting date for English flat racing?

  1. The official start of the Flat TURF season is Lincoln Handicap Day at Doncaster, this year to be held on 22 March.  The jockeys, trainers and owners Championships all start from this day.

    However, this always feels like a false start to the new season as there are no big races following this meeting for another 3 weeks.  Traditionalists prefer to regard the Craven Meeting at Newmarket, this year 16 & 17 April, as the start of the season proper.  I have to say I am with them on that, but I am biased as I live in Newmarket!

    The all-weather racing continues all year round these days, so does not really have a season as such.
