With 7-2 win over Colorado Rockies, Cincinnati Reds take their winning streak to 10 – MLB News
Mat Latos on Sunday, July 29, pitched eight solid innings to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Colorado Rockies 7-2 at Coors Field. The Reds not only swept the three-game series, but also increased their winning streak to 10 games.
Coming with a lot of pressure on his shoulder, Latos did give up a two-run homer in the first inning, that helped the Rockies to hold a 2-1 lead. However, Latos maintained his grip on the game and outmanoeuvred the Rockies' hitters.
Latos referred to that pressure when the game concluded, with another majestic win. "A lot of pressure coming into the game knowing we won nine in a row, but I just attacked them," Latos said. "Today it was in the back of my mind, but it's baseball. Just play."
This is the longest winning streak for the Reds for the last 14 years. Credit, obviously goes to the wonderful game displayed by both the offence and defence. With the win, the Reds have further solidified their place in the NL Central, but they face a tough fight from Pittsburgh Pirates.
"They're not going to go away, that's fairly obvious at this point," outfielder Jay Bruce said while talking about Pirates. "We have some series left with them, but anytime you can gain a game it's great."
Jay Bruce who also hit a solo homer on Sunday as the hitters are performing admirably. “The bats have picked up the past couple of days," Bruce said. "We've been doing what we need to do.”
With Brandon Phillips scoring the first run in the very first inning against Jonathan Sanchez, Miguel Cairo made it 2-2 after Josh Rutledge had scored a two-run homer in the first inning.
Drew Stubbs hit a sacrifice fly hit in the third to make it 3-2 and hit a two-run homer to left in the fifth to take the Reds lead to 5-2.
Jay Bruce made it 6-2 with his homer in the fifth and Miguel Cairo singled to right in the eighth to secure a safe 7-2 lead. After Sanchez gave up six runs in his 4.1 innings, allowing eight hits, Carlos Torres was expected to stop Reds’ flow of run.
He succeeded in that, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings. As Mike Ekstrom came to pitch, he allowed a run to Cairo, which gave the Reds a 7-2 lead. Matt Reynolds’ inning, if nothing else, did not allow the Reds' hitters to score with the same ease that they did in Sanchez and Torres’ respective innings.
Reds’ Sam LeCure came in the ninth to pitch a scoreless inning to wrap up the game with 7-2 grand victory, sweeping the series and taking the game-winning streak to 10.
