Question:

With Child Support, can one parent move?

My youngest, and the only one left that child support gets paid on, is 18, and away from home for college. Since he will only be home on breaks, and maybe summer, if I move to another city, does his mother automatically get more child support? She pays nothing for his college, so it would only basically be when he is home occasionally that she gives him anything.

Any thoughts???

  1. i have no idea why you moving would affect the support. and child support never goes up or down "automatically, only recalculated when either or both parties seek it. ..if theres cause to recalculate.

  2. child support will never automatically increase or decrease because of a relocation....however either party can ask for a modification due to increase/decrease in pay.....and modifications can only be done once a year....at least in the state of indiana....

to the chick b4 me... child support can go to the age of 21 (i  think even 24) as long as the child is in full time school status....

i live in indiana and my kids father lives in tennessee

  3. I thought when children were 18 and no longer living at home; child support stopped.  What state do you live in?  I would check with whoever collects child support (here it is Office of Recovery Services) and ask if you are still obligated to pay at all- whether you move or not.

  4. Child support is based on incomes of both parents..doesn't matter where you live..
