With Spring Training around the corner, Texas Rangers remain quiet over extensions – MLB News
The Texas Rangers’ general manager Jon Daniels is not inclined to give a timeframe for signing the outfielder Josh Hamilton. The player who will be a free-agent once this season ends has yet to get a formal offer from the team for a new contract.
There is obviously a strong reason for the team’s unwillingness to be fully committal and clear about the contract. Josh Hamilton has remained subject to increased media attention due to him being involved in another case of alcohol consumption.
Although Hamilton did not take much time to appear in front of the cameras to publicly apologise for the relapse, as he had consumed alcohol in Dallas at two different bars, the damage has already been done.
Victim in the whole episode is the talented outfielder’s long-term contract. Previously it was in 2009 when he had been found involved in the similar case. But both the team and MLB did not take any strict action against him.
However, while speaking to media on the Texas Rangers’ plans for the future contracts, Jon Daniels preferred speaking in unambiguous terms about the team’s perspective about it. He said that the team will go on to handle the matter privately after addressing
it at some point.
"There is no deadline," Daniels said. "Given what transpired last month, everybody has agreed this is not the time to look at that. The priority is his recovery and his family and, second, getting ready for the season and not let the contract get in the
way. We may address that at some point, but we'll handle it privately. I don't know if it will be this spring or a later date."
Daniels, without naming the players who the club has spoken to, also commented that there have been discussions with certain players about the extensions. "We've had discussions with a few guys about extensions," Daniels said. "Obviously, at this point,
they haven't resulted in a contract.”
But as the news reports have surfaced in the recent past, those players include second baseman Ian Kinsler and outfielder Nelson Cruz, the pitchers Derek Holland and Colby Lewis with catcher Mike Napoli.
Despite the odds that the club might be encountering at this point in time, it is obvious for everyone out there that the Rangers will have a smooth season to defend their American League title. All the same, there is everlastingly growing passion in the
camp to win the World Series title for the first time.
The Rangers have the depth, the strong offence available, to overcome any team in the Division. It will be interesting to see how the Rangers perform during Spring Training as the fans are looking for another tremendous season from them.
