With TV can I use an antenna to get a few main channels?

I can’t afford cable TV only Internet. Can I use an antenna somehow to get a few main channels? Can I do this for any TV?

  1. In most areas you can do this. In fact, back in the early days of TV that was the only way to watch TV.

    If you are in the US, go to the web site below and find out how far you are from the nearest TV transmitters.

    It's best to ask some neighbors what kind of antenna they use. Especially old people who have lived in the area a long time.

    Many people who live with in 10 miles of the transmitters can get by with a $10 "rabbit ear" antenna. If you are within a few miles you might be able to pick some up with a 7" wire stuck in the center of the antenna connector (the famous "paper clip"  antenna.)

    You might want to add your zip code and details like what's between you and the nearest transmitters.

    Most areas in the world are switching to digital broadcasts. In the US you would probably need a cheap convert box (about $20 after coupon) before 2/17/09.
