Question:

With a criminal record, what jobs can I get with my degree?

I have two misdemeanors, a DUI for going through a checkpoint with a BAC of .109, and a 2nd degree burglary conviction for breaking into a friend's garage for a prank when I was 19. I want to work in banking or finance but I'm pretty sure the burglary conviction will make that next to impossible. What jobs can I get? When I graduate next year I'll have a bachelor's degree in Business Management Economics. Please no sarcasm, don't bother answering if you're just going to tell me to work at McDonald's.

  1. Any internships available through the school?  That would get you in a place without a commitment.

  2. Sorry to hear a 'silly' prank is causing you problems.

I haven't worked in the banking industry - mainly high tech - but job applications usually ask about Felony Convictions not misdemeanors.  A background check could pull up your misdemeanors, but if you can  mention it to the supervisor/manager you will work for, and explain the situation, they can decide whether to hire you.

Another thing would be to make sure your MySpace or FaceBook profile doesn't show you as a partier, drinker or druggie of any sort.  Some companies research applicants' more personal side through the internet.  It may sound boring but it's time to show your serious side if you want to get a good job.

    Good luck to you!

  3. I dont' know about the entirety of the banking industry with that background. However, many smaller companies more readily look past that sort of thing based on how they perceive your character in the interview process. Not exactly the field you were looking for, but Life insurance sales makes good money and rarely have problems with that kind of history. Good luck.
