With a dismissed felony, can an individual become a police officer or other law enforcement official?

10 years ago I was convicted of felony vandalism. All restitution had been paid, and just recently I went to court to have my felony dismissed. On the minute order, it states "The order of dismissal does not permit the defendant to own, possess, or have in his custody or control any firearm. If he does own, possess, or have in his custody or control a firearm he will be subject to prosecution under PC 12021."

So, I'm no longer a convicted felon, but I still don't have the right to bare arms. Is there anyway around this if I wanted to to become a police or probation officer?

  1. Where are you living at?

Possible you got a chance or maybe you doesn't have a chance, it's 50/50.

Go to website where you could register at police school near by home, they has information how you become a police officer if you has criminal history over 10 years ago.

  2. Don't let this felony crush your dreams of working in law enforcement(if that's what your after).

An exceptional  resume will buttress your credibility.

Contacting the police department in which you wish to work in is a good idea.

  3. The only way is to request an expongement with the judge that procided over the case. Write a letter and mail it to him. Make sure you state why your requesting the expongement.

  4. I don't mean to crush your hopes here but I don't know of any department who would hire someone who was convicted of a felony.  You may no longer be a convicted felon now but you were convicted of a felony charge and you don't have the right to bear arms still which is a job requirement as a police officer..............

  5. How did you get your felony dismissed?  I would think that if the judge dismissed the felony then you shouldn't be treated as a felon.  I would still try for the job, vandalism way back when is not like killing someone, carjacking, burglary, etc.

The sheriff of Perry County, MS used hard drugs way back when and someone even posted 8x10 pictures of him with a joint in one hand bent over a line of coke ready to snort.

I think you should be ok, if not go to a small little town and your in for sure.  Haha!

  6. um you are sol if you can't possess a gun you cant become a police officer or a P.O.

  7. You need to apply for a pardon from the Governor of your state . if you get a pardon your record is clean .

  8. I'd be surprised if any police department would ever consider hiring a convicted felon.  Even with the dismissal, the terms prohibit you from possessing or controlling a firearm, unless you are in England you are pretty much out of luck.
