Question:

With a newer camcorder and older PC without a firewire port. Is there a DV cable that fits into a USB port?

I have looked for a cable and haven't found one yet. I have a JVC GRD 750 camcorder. I found something that looked like it fit but of course it's close but doesn't fit. I am also on a budget and would like something in-expensive. I have looked at Firewire cards and would like to know if they are easy to install since I can find tons of firewire cables but none with a USB port. Thanks in advance to all responses!

  1. You're best bet is to install a firewire card.  It will give you the best performance when downloading video.  I had to do this to my pc.  Very easy to install.  It took me less than 10 minutes.

  2. No, firewire and USB are not interchangable.

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it (easy, just take the case off, make sure you are unplugged and grounded), since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder.
