  1. I used to do 21 miles each way - but only a couple or a few times a week.

    It is very doable.

It is a nice way to work a workout into your day.

Say it takes 45 or 50 minutes to drive and park your car.  That's already about an hour and a half or more each day - sitting on your asz.

Say it takes 2 hours or so to bike the 30 miles (you could also do it faster).  That's four hours a day or less.

So, for spending an extra 2 and a half hours on the road - you work in four hours of working out.

If you don't have any kids or wife to spend time with - it sounds ideal.  If you do - I would cut down to twice a week or so.  However, if all that riding during the week means that you are not going to go out on that 50 miler on Saturday and/or Sunday morning - perhaps you will still have more quality time to spend with your family on the weekend - and it will be OK.

    Enjoy.

  2. If you're in good shape, it's certainly doable. Above are some excellent ideas. One other is-Make sure you wear the right type of clothing. Avoid cotton at all costs. Most people can wear anything, if they're only going a few miles. However, once you start covering more distances, you'll appreciated moisture wicking fabric, especially when it's hot/raining/cold out. With the right clothing, you can bike through almost any weather.

  3. I agree with Silver bullet. You are going to wear your pistons down with that amount of mileage. I don't know what type of work you do, but come the dead of Summer, a one way trip is going to leave you a bit tacky under the arms. As a retired fire fighter I use to jog to work. The trip was 1 mile by the rail road tracks, or 3 miles by the road. We had showers at work so it was no big deal.

You have to also consider the weather. It might sun-shinny in the morning, but pouring in the evening.

Good luck though my friend. If it is somthing you want to do, "Go for it!"

  4. Ambitious, but not impossible.  I have a few routes that I can take in to work that range from 15-45 miles, depending on how early I can get my butt out of bed.  Just remember, it's going to add quite a bit of time to your work day. Be prepared for flat tires!

  5. Good for you.   Bear in mind that the miles add up, and you may find the need to drive a couple days a week to give your legs a break.    Even if you're in pretty good shape, they'll feel kinda flat around the 3rd or 4th day in a row.

  6. Get some good tyres that will last. Try and get yourself and the bike as light as possible.

What type of bike do you have. it might be best for you to invest in a Road or a hybrid bike, as these will be more efficient than a standard Mountain bike. or you could get some thin slick tyres for the MTB.

If you're going to be cycling that many miles a day, be sure to spend a good 10-15 minutes stretching in the morning. Work your hamstrings, lower back, calves groin and hips.

  7. I think that's an awesome idea, but I don't know how easy it's going to be to do every day, between weather, mechanical problems, and like everyone says your legs WILL get tired, unless you are at like professional level fitness.  I think 3 days a week, M W F maybe would be a better idea, but hey what do i know.  go for it!
