a motorcycle? They get between 35 and 60 mpg (that's right, even the fastest 200+mph bikes get 35mpg), and are very light compared to cars. Since they are light, they'd also be easier to power by electricity, needing smaller batteries.

  1. not all motorcycles get excellent gas mileage, many of the big cruiser bikes such as Harley's, VTX1800's get around 22 to 26 mpg

and gas mileage rates on most bikes are extremely variable depending how hard you ride, riding in low gear, high rpm's, fast will drop gas mileage up to 50%

plus many bikes have small gas tanks, even if you get 50 mpg, you're always stopping for gas with a limited range with a small 2 or 3 gallon gas tank

many gas stations don't make enough money with people on motorcycles only buying 1 or 2 gallons of gas at a time and soon the time is coming where gas stations are going to charge you more for the less amount of gas you buy, soon you will see deals at gas stations where the price is based on the customer buying 8 gallons or more, with a 20% increase in price for lesser amounts

  2. Rain moved into my area and curtailed my riding, but I ride my bike everyday if the weather is permitting. Right now a 50%  chance of thunderstorms means you are very likely to get your *** wet! I'd rather start work dry and get wet later. BTW my Shadow gets 58mpg Joe. Guess it's because of the plastic side cover? Rain or shine, uphill or down, fast or slow. That is why they call it AVERAGE MILES PER GALLON. It could get as much as 175 mpg going downhill and as little as 15 uphill. Drive equally uphill and down and those two numbers added together and divided by two gives you the AVERAGE.

  3. I ride a motorcycle now almost as much as I drive my car.  Depending on the weather and where I am going or if I need to transport stuff/people, will determine if I ride the bike or not.

Bikes (some) can cost as much as cars, some people are scared of them (to ride them or ride on them).  They are dangerous.  You are more likely to die or get seriously injured in a motorcycle accident than in a vehicular accident.

Even if all the riders on the road were motorcyclist, they would still be getting into accidents with each other.

Cars have been and are being developed (full blown cars, that can seat 4 or 5 people and still have trunk space) to operate at or well over motorcycle fuel economy.

  4. I am definitely seeing more motorcycles on the road as well as bikes. Motorcycles aren't very safe, and many people aren't comfortable riding them.  Also, they suck in the winter.

  5. I didn`t consider a motorcycle because 60mpg is just bad compared to a Vintage scooter!, Yeah, a scooter and scooters have their own "scene" too. scooterists stick together because there arent too many of us, compared to motorcycleists where you have all kinds and too wide of a range of attitudes. Scooters are easily modded, and stock 150`s are freeway legal!

  6. You obviously have not been reading the question here (about needing new bike for beginners).

but you should know about this:

    There's no free lunch.

    Good Luck...

  7. You will find lots of people changed thier old bike to electric powered off of three deep cycle batteries.  takes a bit on the charging system but get about 70-90 miles out of a charge.

Still just not yet convienet enough.

  8. becos people have families dumbass,

u aint going to drop your kids off at school or take the family dog to the vet on a motorcycle.

  9. AWH Really !! Gee I wonder why no body in this cat has ever thought of that Thanks for the info !!!

  10. The fact that most shops can't keep small to mid sized bikes on the floor now and that people have been waiting in line for months to get a new Ninja 250R suggests that it has already been considered by a lot of folks.

  11. My Toyota Paseo gets 37 mpg my R1 gets around 40 some odd mpg. My R1 burns up a set of tires in 3000 miles. Its cheaper to drive my car, and save my bike and tires for recreation.

Batteries are very heavy, and you would have to have enough of them to get somewhere and back.

  12. I was considering it but didn't get one for a few reasons.

    1) dangerous and you have to drive really defensively and ASSUME that other people WILL hit you...i'm 17 and i don't want to die yet.

    2) only 1-2 people including yourself

    3) not much cargo space

    4) bad weather conditions=not a good idea/frustrating to drive

  13. This is very common solution in some countries. A lot of people don't like it because of it's dangerous image, however.

  14. because you cant transfer a family of three on a mo-ped fool! jk. but seriously...one word overpopulation!

  15. >because you cant transfer a family of three on a mo-ped fool! jk. but seriously...one word overpopulation!<

Nonsense.  Most of the world travels on 250cc bikes and the riders carry their wife and kid (or two) with them.

650cc motorcycles with sidecars were common family conveyances for Brits till the 1950s when cars became affordable.

When the oil companies extorted us in the 1970s many people, who would never have considered it otherwise, began riding motorcycles

For some reason, though, mothers in America think they need a large, air conditioned  truck to take one child to futbol practice.
