With gas pricing climbibg so high would you consider taking public transportation to work?

I have done this for about three and a half months. For three months I did not drive my car at all. I could take transit to shop, the library, and restaurants and bars. I found it cheaper than driving but I had to let go of control of my schedule. With this in mind, how would you answer my question?

  1. there's only 65,000 residents in my county so it is not now nor will it ever be an option for me here. I do live in close proximity to Chicago and it has one of the highest usages of public transit in the world, so there are people out there that do put it to good use.

  2. I would like to use public trans, but the buses are not running when I leave for work.  Plus the 12 mile trip takes an hour.  Faster for me to ride my bicycle.  Plus, my quit time varies from day to day.  So I will continue to ride my motorcycle to work.  So far I have saved around $55 since March over my van.

  3. I would. But that might be where I live. My bus (in Calgary Canada) comes every 7 minutes off-peak and every 3-5 on peak. Then I get 4 express routes, rapid bus, and a scenic route to pick from.

Canadian gas prices also help ($1.29/L or approx $5.30/gallon). Then toss in that Calgary downtown parking costs an average of $15 to $20 on a weekday. Then toss in that the bus takes only 5 minutes longer (it gets extra green lights), but not finding parking means I save 10 minutes. Even better, I don't have to deal with road rage or idiot drivers who yapp on their phones and drive the wrong way down a highway, why would I even bother driving to work? I guess I'm just lucky. The rest of the city doesn't have service as good as I do.

  4. I would LOVE to take public transport to my work, as I drive an hour each way every day, sometimes longer if there is a traffic accident or other holdup.

Unfortunately, the public transport services in my area are inefficient and expensive. It would take me half an hour longer to get to work, plus it would cost almost as much as it does to run my car.

And I would have to go bus, train, change to another train and walk. As I frequently bring work or office supplies to and fro, it would be much less convenient. And, I also work long hours and am concerned about personbal safety on rail stations particularly, at night.

I wish the government where I live (who run the public transport system) would either provide more services or enable private operators to get into business and give a decent service.

I would be so glad to catch a bus, read a book or magazine, or just doze off, and arrive at work refreshed instead of exhausted from driving!

    Best wishes :-)

  5. absolutely i would , i live fairly close tomy job so not to much of an issue for me but if i had to i would. its good for my pockets and good for the environment. good for you for doing this.

  6. the bus isn't' that bad.. I've tried it.. however moving closer to my work as i did a few months back has drastically improved my budget.. now it only takes me 4 min to get to work.. so i drive instead of bus it..

  7. I would say yes I would it makes it harder for me because one I have 3 kids and two there are no public transits out where I live.

  8. I've riden the bus previously, but they changed the route and now it does not work well for me.  However, I am able to ride my bike to work and that's working great for me.

  9. You are so lucky to have P,T. available.  Where I live I have no choice.  Cars are so expensive to own and operate.

  10. Well public transportation is sometimes a bit hard on me and my schedule so i'd rather carpool with some friends. That way we all save money and we enjoy the ride to work

  11. I have been fortunate enough to organize my business to operate from home,  I have public transit just 300 paces from my door to home shopping, library visits, movies or dinning out.  I have a transit pass that offers deep discounts for a 90 day chunk.  I have cut back to one vehicle (for my wife). If I need a vehicle I rent what I need be it a sedan, a van, a freight truck or a tractor trailer (DOT Cert.) and it is delivered to my door.  Expenses for my various needs for transport are down by 60%.  My business partner who can not just yet make those leaps is still nurturing a big monthly nut for his expenses.

I have given over to fate the fine points of my scheduling.  I have two cellphones and a rugged laptop.  It all works better than I had ever anticipated.

  12. I absolutely would however my job isn't too far to where gas is affecting me that much. It's killing my bf though since we live closer to my job and a lot further from his. It's seriously getting ridiculous.
