With necessary adjustments, Chicago Cubs' Brett Jackson making strides – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs' manager on Tuesday, December 4, made clear what the club’s course of action will be next year with regards to outfielder Brett Jackson could well fill the spot. It all, of course, hinges upon how he performs in the days ahead.
The view pertaining to Jackson is the culmination of changes that the young outfielder has recently made. To open the 2013 season at Triple-A Iowa, he was called up this August, batting .175 in 44 games.
"There's no doubt that Brett Jackson could be part of the Cubs' big league team next year," Sveum said. "These kind of things are obviously all up to the individual now.”
Cubs might have exhibited some haste when they had brought Jackson in the middle of the regular season. A .175 batting average was not impressive given the expectations attached to him and nonetheless Dale Sveum has an explanation for that.
"We brought him up last season hoping he was going to do well but knowing we get to see him first-hand, where a week ago, he went out to Arizona, we were able to fix the things and be hands-on," Sveum said. “Things obviously didn't go well but he knows now that sometimes you have to hit that wall to know, 'Wow, I really have to make some huge adjustments to play at this level.'"
Going into Spring Training, Jackson has a lot of opportunity to make the necessary adjustments and changes to further refine his hitting skills. The required overhaul will put him in stronger position in a fiercely competitive league.
The Cubs focus for now is to have an outfielder who can play right and centre field. Jackson, with the experience he has had both in the Minor and Major Leagues, can prove to be the kind of player the Cubs are looking for.
Playing excellent at centre, Jackson can well be a good choice for the Cubs. The adjustments that he has made will tremendously help him and the Cubs in the long run. A team which is in rebuilding phase, a combination of young and experienced players will serve out well.
