Question:

With regard to BLOOD PRESSURE, what does it mean when the Systolic is normal, but the Diastolic is high?

I just took my BP, and my Systolic was 124, but the Diastolic was 93. This seems to be an ongoing thing. I take HCTZ, 25 mg, which helps. I also need to lose weight, but I'm wondering about this difference.

Does anyone know why this will happen, and what are the effects?

Thanks,

Pauley

  1. Your blood pressure is normal, the diastolic isn't high at all. However, Pauly this is definitely all dependent upon age. A 60 year old man will have a much higher bp than that of a 20 year old female. So now, back to your question. Your systolic pressure is basically the amount of pressure in your vein based upon the contraction of your heart. So, if you had 160 as your systolic pressure, that means that your heart is working really hard because he's squeezing the blood out much higher than the norm. The diastolic is the pressure in your vein when relaxed. You shouldn't feel any effects or anything because it is rather normal.

It's kind of like body temperature, we're all supposed to have an average of 98.6 but my average is closer to 96.8. Our bodies are all different and your diastolic pressure might be a little higher because of the excess weight that you want to lose.

    Hope this helps :-)
