Question:

With regard to "Global Warming" why the lack of basic knowledge?

After reviewing questions and answers relating to Global Warming I have noted a lack of any real understanding of the science behind this phenomenon. Our family web site has a page presenting the basics (www.thecookcompanies.com). It's not as if the science is hard to find. So why the lack of even the most basic understanding?

  1. Look at what the Bush admin. has censored in the 'official' reports on climate change.  I convinced myself of global warming 20 years ago!  I did it by simple deduction, and basic Physics.  It's not rocket science! Many of the postings on here are from a troop of very snarky, argumentative, trolls, that have no real understanding of Natural Science. They take bits and pieces of this and that, and stitch together a ridiculous claim about the 'other' planets getting warmer,or maybe we could build a giant air conditioner to cool the Arctic to re-freeze the ice cap. We need to start figuring out how we can survive WITHOUT  using ANY MORE OIL! It's a PLANETARY EMERGENCY!

  2. Does the basic knowledge tell you that the Earth is not the only planet experiencing this effect at the same time with melting polar caps too?  It's true.  So what could cause that?  Only the sun.  Global warming yes, man made, BS

  3. You might want to update the info on your website - according to NASA, 2007 tied 1998 as the second-warmest year on record.

Some people are simply in denial about global warming.  If they were to understand the basic science, they would have to accept that global warming is a serious problem which we're causing.  They don't want to accept this reality, so they don't allow themselves to understand the science.  Other people simply haven't taken the time to research the issue.

  4. I agree with you wholeheartedly, ignorance is running rampant all over the world! Their is no doubt the planet is warming. In fact, so is Saturn and Jupiter. Now I haven't been able to find any info. on how man is doing that! The Sun is generating more heat. That I've researched a bit. A prudent plan to stop the Sun, I haven't seen yet. However, contrary to what Energy dreamer says. Their are going to be some negative side effects to the proposed plans! Everything will be more expensive, for one. The power brokers will get richer and more powerful, enabling them to increase our powerlessness. So, unless your a gazillionaire, like dreamer. Your life is going to get a lot more complicated!

  5. Many of the scientists and the media pumping their findings (and ignoring the other side), have political axes to grind and.or vested interests in the outcome.

In truth, there is evidence on both sides - it's not so clear cut as you paint it to be - I notice your site contains not one dissenting opinion.

  6. Today here is what we know:  many of mankind’s advancements cause earth surface to warm, destroy the ozone layer, kill off endanger species, heat cities, and in some way cause more destruction.  Blacktop (roads and parking lots), buildings, air pollution (causes lung and other diseases), deforestation, duststorms (which increase hurricanes and cyclones and cause lung diseases), fires (cause pollution, mud slides, and deforestation), refrigerants (like CFC's), solvents (including benzene destroy the ozone layer raising skin cancer rates) and plastics; cars, airplanes, ships and most electricity production (causes pollution including raised CO2 levels) are human problems we need to fix to keep life on earth sustainable! The federal government needs to adopt a pollution surcharge to balance the field and advance new technologies. We must pay the real price of oil (petrochemicals) including global warming, cleanup and for health effects. But with that we must understand we have never seen what is now happening before. CO2 has never lead to temperature change, but temperature change has led to increases in CO2. The models have to be made as we go along with little evidence! The result is:  change is on the way, we just do not know what changes. But again adding a small amount of CO2 to the atmosphere enlarges the earths sun collection causing warming; increase water in the atmosphere and they form clouds cooling earth but causing flooding. Even natural events are warming earth and causing destruction. The sun has an increased magnetic field causing increases in earthquakes (more destruction), volcanoes (wow, great destruction), and sun spots. Lighting produces ozone near the surface (raising air pollution levels). But humans have destroyed half of the wetlands, cut down nearly half of the rain forest, and advance on the earths grasslands while advancing desertification which increases duststorms. The USA Mayor's have taken a stand and I believe are on the right track, we can have control and can have economic growth. With the peak of oil in the 1970’s, the peak of ocean fishing in the 1980’s, humans must stop procrastinating and make real changes to keep earth sustainable including in the energy debate, finance and regulation. The sun is available to produce energy, bring light to buildings and makes most of human’s fresh water. Composting is the answer to desertification. New dams are the answer to fresh water storage, energy and cooling earth by evaporation, we need many small ones all over (California needs 100 by 2012 and has not even started).

President Bush has made a choice of energy (ethanol) over food and feeding the starving people around the world; this is a choice China has rejected.

That is why I founded CoolingEarth.org, a geoengineering web sight where you can learn more about earth, the atmosphere, and how to sustain life on earth’s surface.

  7. Yes it's shocking that people can't understand the simple basics that the Sun is causing the slight increase in temps.

Why can't people understand that the Sun is the source for all warmth on Earth?

  8. Getting answers to the cause of global warming is difficult because the Earth changes constantly due to natural causes. Coast lines change, mountains blow their tops, rivers change and ice melts and reforms at another time. I believe that we are contributing to those changes but in truth, only time will tell whether or not the polar ice caps will re-freeze or the coast lines will flood.

Experts argue but seem to miss the most critical point. We would be fools to say that we play no role in global warming. We would be fools to avoid doing the best job at preventing global damage. Global warming may be really bad but actual global damage is truly frightening. It really should not take a green skinned tree hugger to show that we are placing an unreasonable burden on our Earth and need to at least try to do something about it. What is lost by trying? What is gained by not trying?
