  2. This sounds more like LDAP than botany.

    A Distinguished Name (DN) is the full path to the entry, starting at the root, e.g. dc=com,dc=myco,ou=HR,cn=fred.

    A Relative Distunguished Name (RDN) is just part of that, e.g. ou=HR,cn-fred
