almost 6.5 million will this give the flyers enough money to sign brain campell. If not who do you think they can land in FA.

  1. i dont really think they have a shot at him. he already knows where he wants to go.

  2. If the Flyers sign Brian Campbell I will demand the resignation of Homer.

First off, no, even with the cap going up $6.5M the flyers will not have $7M+ available for Campbell. They are, by my estimation with the signing of Carter, sitting at around $58M - the cap is going to be $56.7M. (The 08-09 cap doesn't take effect until July 1. From July 1 to the end of training camp you can exceed the cap by 10%).

Yes, the $58M there includes Hatch, Rathje, and Gauthier. Yes, Rathje will probably be on Long Term IR for 08-09, but that doesn't remove his cap number (Through some wacky machinations that I don't understand the Flyers get cap credit if the player they REPLACE Rathje with exceeds the cap. But I don't think they could sign Campbell and say that he's replacing Rathje.) The Goat could be waived and sent back to the Phantoms (removing him from the cap entirely), waived and bought out (about 1/3 of his $2M on this years cap, 1/3 on next years), or waived and picked up by another team (half his $2M on this years cap). Hatch could retire.

What that $58M DOES NOT include is Randy Jones and Steve Eminger. Or any other Flyers RFAs or UFAs (J Smith, R Cote, P Thoresen, Niskala).

So no, the Flyers won't be signing Campbell. And don't hold your breath for any other earth shattering FAs. They'll probably add a Defensman, but it will be a veteran making $1.5M or so (I wouldn't be surprised if it was Jason Smith). And they'll add a Center, much like Jim Dowd last year. But that will pretty much be it, unless Hatch decides to retire between now and July 1. At which point you may see Mike Commodore - but I wouldn't count on it.

And I didn't even get into the long-term implications of signing Campbell now and next offseason not be able to re-sign Biron, Lupul, or Upshall.

  3. i dont think so, other teams like chicago have the cap space to nearly sign campell and another good forward, want him desprately.  the flyers might be able to get liles, or mayber rosival would be a good option
