  1. Coal will most certainly be mined in great quantities within the next decade, they would still be mined today were it not for that excuse for a woman the demon that said she just wanted the UK to be a services industry, and I forcast within the next 25 years ALL YES ALL the countries will see sense and bow out of the pollution  legislation because the world will become bankrupt otherwise

  2. 2 main reasons: emissions and sustainability

Coal gives off very high CO2 emissions, and the emissions given off are not part of the current carbon cycle. This is because the coal has been forming for thousands to millions of years under high pressure. The organic mater is then not part of the current cycle and is carbon positive. Also the emissions are scrubbed but the NOx and SOx emissions are also high, which can degrading of the atmosphere as well as acid rain.

Coal is not sustainable because it can not be used again. It is a one time use then it will take thousands to millions of years to form again were alternative energy looks to use fuels that can be obtained again. For example using a energy crop such as switchgrass, it can be harvested then nutrients added to soil and harvested again the following year

  3. The environment is a major factor as is the cost, whilst importing fuels is expensive the cost of retrieving coal is more

  4. Welsh councils have been refusing the government permission to do it...so the government have overuled it and are starting soon anyway....

  5. Because of the enviromental issues

  6. I think it's because of the negative effects it has on the environment. It's also expensive to mine and isnt very practical to use in the home.

  7. We are mining for coal - many seams have been re-opened in recent years.

But we also have obligations to Carbon Reduction from treaties we have signed (and from common sense). Coal-fired power stations are about the worst polluters in terms of CO2 emission, so they are not really a feasible option.

Nuclear power, OTOH, is as carbon-neutral as it is possible to get. It might pollute in other ways, but it has no CO2 emissions. This is why new-generation nuclear power stations are the government's top priority for power generation in the years to come.

Obviously, renewable energy (solar, wind, tide, etc.) is the optimum. But we spent the last couple of decades FAILING to develop alternative power sufficiently, so that is not currently an option.

Also, many people have an irrational objection to them... Don't ask me why.

  8. we aren't allowed because of the gases coal gives off when it's burnt !

so we all have to struggle by and starve, but hey we will have clean air, so they say.

it's a con, cheap fuel means less tax to the government

  9. It's not an energy crisis as such, more an oil and gas crisis.  Most people don't heat their homes using coal anymore.  I think I only know one person who has a coal fire in their home nowadays but even they have central heating too.  It's not so much the fuel for heating that we're short of but the oil which makes Petrol and Diesel and also makes everything that's made of plastic, fertilisers, chemicals, detergents and soaps etc.  Most factory chimneys have been demolished and even if they were rebuilt - Would you really want a return to the huge chimneys burning huge amounts of black smoke into the air again?  Not me.

  10. manly because of the cost but also the carbon emissions are very high

coal is classed as a dirty fuel
