Question:

With the growing concern for a greener tomorrow, why isn't Hemp being considered as an alternative source?

As I understand it, hemp can be used as plastic, without all the toxins; it can also be used as paper, without cutting down trees that take decades to regrow (as opposed to hemp regrowing within months); and it can even be used in place of hardwood. There are many more uses for Hemp, and no, getting high is not one of them. Is there something that I am missing, as to the reason it's not at least being considered as an alternative source?

I have even bought paper made from banana fibers... There are so many other alternative sources that work, yet we continue to use the harmful products, thinking all we need to do is tell people to use less... Why?

  1. Hemp as a textile last longer than most others. It is strong, durable and has been said to have "self-healing" fibers. It became outlawed when the textile industry saw that it had some serious competition. Yes it could be used for many things. Think about it- what if you never in your lifetime had to replace something? PS- one of the big soda names started out as a drug and then became a drink- think about it. Follow the money...

  2. Obviously because of the illegal drug (marijuana) that grows on that plant.

  3. I know how you feel, and there are some really great small companies out there that offer these products. But consider the industries which they would replace i.e. timber, cotton, oil. These are huge companies with an enormous amount of power and control. The only way to change this is to change the way we consume. Unfortunately, especially here in the United States, people are way too distracted by their "convenient" lifestyle; they think it is something they deserve or earned. Think of how we let ourselves be controlled by television and fast food, we've grown fat and lazy and oblivious to the world around us. Even when presented with the facts, the mindset is "someone will do something about it" and then they go back to watching sports and reality shows.

It really is all very sad and frustrating, but don't let it discourage you. Keep doing what you know is right for our planet, and encourage others to do the same. Here is a quote that I hope you will find inspirational:

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it's the only thing that ever has."    ~~ Margaret Mead

    The tides are turning.....

  4. They actually have hemp clothing and jewlery, and it's used a lot for various types of cloth diapers (VERY absorbant)

Not sure why it's not utilized better, but it's becoming more popular.
