  1. It's not poor etiquette to buy store brands.

I prefer store brand english muffins over the national brand.

  2. yep, with the one exception of progresso tuna fish in olive oil.  i will buy that brand tuna til the day i die.

  3. I just buy less. It depends on the taste of the food. If I don't like the taste of a generic or store brand, I'm not going to eat it and that will waste the whole thing.

  4. I never thought about that but it's a good idea. Thanks! It may be the way to go, but you never know the quality until you try it. I say, go for it :)

  5. Neither.  I have resorted to searching for a second job to pay all my bills, including food.

  6. I don't think the price of the food i eat has gone up. You will find eating healthy a lot cheaper than buying processed food.

I can buy a bag of vegetables like onions, tomatoes, cucumber, cauliflower, broccolli, peppers, potatoes etc etc for less than $15.

That would last me a few weeks. People spend $10 on one pizza these days. Rice and pasta is very cheap. Like i said, it depends what you eat.

  7. Not yet.

  8. I cut costs where I can. Store brands can be just as good as name brands, depending on what it is. But there's no cutting corners when it comes to Pop tarts, LOL!

  9. yes, i have. You gotta do what you gotta do......

  10. Generic brands are typically produced by the companies that bring you the name brands.

When the supermarket contracts with them to produce the generic brand, the name brand company usually reserves the right to choose the packaging to make it less appealing.

  11. It depends on the item.  Some things, the store brand seems to be better to me, some things I'd rather get a smaller one or get it less often and get the name brand than get it cheaper.  Sorry for this example, but it's the best one that came ot mind: my pads that I use each month; I've tried the store brand and it just isn't as good as the name brand I always get, so I search for coupons and catch sales or I just do without something else.  I will get store brand olive oil, especially if I'm just cooking with it, because the store brand seems pretty good to me.  I also like the Giant Eagle brand frosted flakes better than Kellogs Frosted Flakes, so go figure.

  12. Some store brands are ok for staples, and I really don't eat the processed foods much.  You would be surprised how little you miss the chips and dip.  I changed the way I shop.  I used to buy whatever.  Now I make a menu and buy what I know I will use.  I take a list and stick to it.  I pop my own popcorn for an evening snack.  I melt a tiny bit of butter, add sea salt, and sprinkle it over the popped corn.  Since cold cuts are full of additives, I use my lefotver chicken for sandwiches.  Mayo is crazy expensive, so I use cream cheese as a spread instead.

  13. psh i grow my own food now.

  14. my mom buys store brands items.. SOMETIMES.

she tried it with ice cream and it didn't work out. it just didn't taste right so we stopped buying the store brand.

salt, flour, sugar, some juices, mashed potato mix, etc - we buy those items as store brands

:'( but i just love brand name stuff

haha, i guess i'll have to get over it though!

  15. I prefer to buy my favorite foods and coffee but the store brands are just as good if you like them. I have cut out cookies and all junk food and try to eat a disciplined diet anyway!

  16. There are some items where I do purchase store brand, usually the ones where the taste is not affected, I have however switched to cheaper brands in paper towels, hand soaps, etc. in an effort to save a bit of money.

  17. we must have some luxuries..but, mostly, i purchase things on sale, and buy store brands..

  18. There is nothing wrong with buying store brands to save a buck or two here and there.  Store brands are manufactured according to the same quality controls as are "trusted" brands since all food manufacturers must follow government regulations when it comes to food.

  19. No, I won't buy generic food if I know it tastes like c**p.  I would rather pay for the brand name.  I have actually started to cut back on my budget in general.
