With windows vista, can you connect 2 computers together without a router? ?

with like an ethernet cable or wirelessly? Does it need a special ethernet cable?

  1. You can connect two computers two each other using 1 ethernet cable, but then all they can do it communicate with each other, and not use the internet. Although if one computer has two ethernet ports, then you could share internet between them from one computer. Other than that, you need a router.


  2. Are you just trying to share files with each other?  

    Using your wireless connection or hardwired to the router together... start a little network.  I taught my mom by just creating the WORKGROUP.  Join all of your computers together in the WORKGROUP domain (network discovery saves a lot of time).  


  3. hi you can setup an adhoc network where one laptop shares its wifi connection to the other more below, if you cant get this to work as it can be fiddly purchase an ethernet cross over cable to allow you to connect 2 computers via the network ports, you'll also need to allocate static ip addresses as there will be nothing to provide them

  4. You can use a cross CAT5 patch cable (not a straight one); give each pc a static private IP address in the same subnet and you are in business.

    This does not take you to the Internet.
