I went to Umpqua Bank's ATM machine in Columbia State Historic Park on Saturday and decided to withdraw $220. When the machine pushed out the bills, it kept 3/5 of a 20 dollar bill. So, I got $200 and 2/5 of a 20 dollar bill. What do I do about this? I'm thinking I must wait till Monday when the bank is open and show them the receipt and ask them to review the security camera on the machine. I put the torn piece of the bill into the camera's view. So, I have the receipt, my girlfriend as a witness, and hopefully, video evidence of it. I should get a whole $20, right?

  1. Yeah, you can try to get your 20 back, but I doubt they'll actually go through all the trouble of reviewing the security tape just for 20 bucks. Good luck though.

  2. I'd say you handled the situation pretty well.  Made sure that you showed the camera the partial $20 and kept your receipt.  Also, if the $20 was partially eaten by the machine, chances are the remains will still be there or there machine will be jammed up and they will be well aware that there is a problem.

The bank is not out any money.  I used to work at a bank and we separated any "mutilated" money we came across from our regular cash and returned it to the federal reserve.

Best of luck to you.  I hope they treat you well and you get your $20 back.
