  1. yes it denotes a stop sign

  2. Hello Mokicat,

As far as I am able to research for you, it is of an ancient Celtic origin, and can be found on many monuments situated in a lot of Irish places, and it's poswsible it was adapted from some pagan sribings from before that Celtic time, beyond that, I can only hope that this helps you with your query..Good Luck now with your deeper investigations...bye Tony M

  3. the octagon is a taoist symbol which is mainly Chinese in origin, you will see it most commonly as an octagon with a circular mirror in the middle and 8  sets of markings called trigrams  around the  mirror, which denote, man , heaven, and earth.. some call this a bag ua ( pak wa) mirror, and is used to ward off bad energy in feng shui

it has nothing to do with Irish culture, religion or society.

    hope this helped

  4. nope, wel, not that i know of anyway and ive been irish all my life!

  5. The octagon has no special religious significance in Christian or pagan religions.

In the wiccan religion which is very loosely (and some would say ficticiously based) on Celtic spirituality it is a commonly used device for pendants but am unsure of its meaning

  6. Never that I've heard of, and I'm a Pagan and am also familiar with Catholicism.

The circle is important in Paganism. In case you were wondering, like.

  7. Not that I know of.

  8. I wonder is the Op talking about the shape the Office of Public Works tend to use. (I think it's octagon) and was originally taking from some of the markings found in Newgrange.  ??? * I could have dreamt all of these but am nearly sure I heard it somewhere*
