The US

The US has a reasonably large army; maybe not as large as Russia's, but much better equipped and effective on a unit-by-unit level.

The F-22 and F-15, M1A2 Abrams, MLRS, AH-64 Apache, and UAV's are much better than their Russian equivalents. Plus, US forces generally have superior training, Spetsnaz not included.

The Abrams, for instance, has been shown as capable of resisting multiple hits in the same location from T-80 tanks without being destroyed/disabled, while the main gun of an Abrams can shoot through two T-80's with one shot.

The MLRS is a guided system, whereas the Russian Katyushas are more of a "spray-n-pray" weapon.

Plus, as an added benefit, we would have most of the EU on our side.

As this conflict in Georgia demonstrated, by day number 6 a huge number of Russian convoy equipment and tanks broke down and the Russians had to strip Georgian parts off of their tanks in order to get Russian tanks to run again. Further, the Russian discipline is so horribly bad that they resorted to robbing Georgia banks and shooting journalists. We have a 5 to 1 jet fighter superiority in terms of numbers and it is estimated that our jet fighters would shoot down 20 Russian jet fighter to every 1 of ours shot down. The truth is that if the USA would have entered the Georgian conflict, military estimates tell us that we wouldn't have had to put one man or conventional force or one piece of equipment into Georgia and we could have taken out the complete Russian invading army and all of their personal and shot down all of their fighters within 3 hours. Russia has become a 1st rate economy and a 3rd to 4th rate military force as demonstrated through this Georgian conflict.

Putin realized through this conflict that his army is allot worse off than he evaluated and predicted as Georgia knocked out 10 of their jets within hours as Putin had no idea just how bad and inept his men and equipment were and now Russia quickly accepted a cease fire when we put some of our equipment on the ground in Georgia when just one week ago, Putin thought that he was powerful and now he realized just how weak his army is. Without nukes, Russia is a complete joke and an embarrassment.

I think the US would have a tough time shutting down Russia trade through embargo's and sanctions. I think the Navy could do a good job blocking Russian ports. I would think the US would start a bombing campaign that would probably last between 5 and 8 months. Then I think the US would invade Russia. Russia's vastness offers a problem for the American Blitzkrieg. Even in Iraq America had supply problems because they moved so fast. I think America would invade would invade invade though the Baltic Sea or around Scandinavia. I think the first goal would be taking St. Petersburg. Russia's only year round port that links Russia to the Atlantic Ocean. Taking St. Petersburg a couple weeks after the first landings without huge losses the US would realize only taking Moscow would end the war. Now we have to see if the Russian people were willing to put up a strong defense. If they are holding Russian territory would be a problem. US forces would be continual drained by Russian partisan forces. I think the US would accelerate its Moscow attack. They would drive into Russia destory massive amounts of vechiles during its attack because of US air superity. Now I think the US would know that the Russian government could pack up from Moscow and move east just like they did in 1941 when Hilter invaded or when Napeleon invaded the vast country. So I think America would use its forces to swing south past the Ukraine into the Cacauses. They maybe even launch a attack from friendly bases in Georgia, Turkey and maybe even Iraq to meet up with the northern invasion force. Once they met up Russia would be split in half and the Russia's greatest asset it's massive oil fields in the Cacuses Mountains in US hands would cut a deep wound into Russia. Without oil the Russian military machine would come to a stand still. Without oil to trade to countrys for other supplies Russian morale would dip. In a best case scenario Russia would go under after being cut in two but America might have to take Moscow. They would probably surrond it and bombard the city for several weeks before entering it very catiously after hopefully captureing or destory Russian leaders and its capital the Russian people would give up. We do have to factor in the Vietnam Factor. If America loses too many young boys and the war takes too long America will become upset and not support the war.
