Without photoshop how do I alter a pic...for instance add a candle to a pic from another pic?

open both pictures, select candle with lasso tool around edges, copy,

then paste over other background image on to new layer,

~from there you can move, resize, edit candle layer, save as xcf, then save copy as jpg,
