Question:

Without using interstate highways, how can I map a bike route from Oregon to Washington DC and back?

I know riding on most interstates is illegal not to mention dangerous. I am trying to create a route going between Oregon and Washington DC--I came up with one however it used mostly interstate roads. I am having trouble finding roads that link up between all the dead space that is only connected by interstates. If you know of any mapsites or links to bike routes that can be conbined to traverse this distance that would be much appreciated. Although I know interstate riding is illegal, are there any other situations with roads not accessible to cyclists that I should know about? I have done some hundred plus mile rides but they have been on country roads. Thanks.

P.S. Departure in oregon can occur from either Portland, Salem, or Ashland.

  1. Hi Garrett - Hey actually it is legal to ride on some interstates!

Hmm... check out this link to a bicycle trip planner - I'm not sure it can map the whole trip, but you could use a resource for getting through the areas it covers:

Also - sounds like you live in Oregon - how about joining the Portland Bike Forum and posting your question there - I am sure someone has an opinion/advice!

You'll probably have to piece together using atlases and recreation guides - but there may be something difinitive out there.

Good luck - maybe Google "Bike, trip, routes, america" or something - I would've but I'm short on time right now.
